Resource Ethical Dilemmas Definitions and Reference List

Definitions

Nursing encompasses the protection promotion and restoration of health and well-being; the prevention of illness and injury; and the alleviation of suffering, in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations” (ANA, 2015, p. 9).

Ethical Sensitivity: “Ability to recognize an ethical problem or ethical aspects of situations” (Lechasseur et al., 2018, p. 697).

Ethical Knowledge: Knowledge based on a combination of philosophical, theoretical… and practical knowledge, while taking into account the context and people involved (Lechasseur et al., 2018, p. 698).

Ethical Reflection: “To reflect critically about what nurses know, are, and do (Lechasseru et al., 2018, p. 698). Ethical reflection “represents a way of thinking that helps to clarify our beliefs and thoughts” (Lechasseur et al., 2018, p. 699).

Ethical Decision Making: “A decision-making process aimed at making a reasonable and responsible choices from among a number of alternatives” (Lechasseur et al., 2018, p. 699).

Ethical Action: “Action that is the product of critical reflection and analysis motivated by the desire to assist and accompany a person along his or her path” (Lechasseur et al., 2018, p. 699).

Ethical Behavior: “Relating to others in ways that are respectful, responsive and supportive of their concerns” (Lechasseur et al., 2018, p. 700).
